adam1This past August, I came across a game called Adams Trouble, the lite version, from a developer who requested a review from Appstruck. I admit, my first impressions were slightly of the nauseated variety – having looked over the main character, Adam, I described him as, “a strange, amorphous, reddish beige creature with bulging eyes, crude red fish lips, a thin tail extending from his bottom, and green pustules on his face” (read full review here). I didn’t exactly paint a pretty picture of Adam, because well, he wasn’t pretty in the slightest. But, pretty is overrated, especially in games as fun as Adams Trouble, and so I looked forward to a full version, with more levels, as the Lite version was far too short with its mere 3 rounds.

Just as I had hoped, Punflay recently released Adams Trouble Full, with a grand 25 levels over which you may throw more temper tantrums, and then ball up your fists and cry. 25 levels may not seem like much, but trust me, Adam is in a lot of trouble, and needs to keep his head adam3above water. Literally. The sewer waters rise just as fast as in the Lite version, and if you wait too long to escape through the sewer hutch, then it’s bye-bye for Adam, and another round of torture for you. Adam is still in the sewer, and you still tug his tail to send him careening around the screen, and the creepy, adrenaline-surging music still echos in the midst, so the full version really is just an extended version of the Lite version <insert duh here>, but there are a few notable differences; differences, I think, that improve the game, albeit in a funny way.

In the Lite version, whenever you die, Adam emits a frighteningly dark sound, a sound I was so confounded over how to describe, that I amusingly resorted to the following description:

If Adam falls into his watery demise – which he undoubtedly will – his facial expression and countenance does not change, but he does utter what I can only describe as a demon frog groaning in subdued fury and frustration – like a croaking “NOOOOOOO.”

I wasn’t terribly keen on this sound effect, so I’m overjoyed the developer replaced this sound with a high-pitched “Arrggh!” sound, a scream that – if it could scream – I believe a chipmunk would make. In the Lite version, as well, Adam’s scream was accompanied by a disturbing lack of animation on his part – no blink of the eyes, no parting of the lips, just a adam2flaccid, inert state of catatonia. In the Full version, a claymation effect takes place, where Adam crumples into himself, de-morphing from his amorphous orange blob state into a featureless blob, and then nothing. I quite like this effect. It makes the Oops! Try Again screen more bearable, in a way, knowing I’ll at least have the pleasure of seeing Adam melt from the poison sewer waters, rather than just sit in a puddle, and croak like a frog.

The game is as hard as ever, and I really have no faith in my ability to pass the 8th level. I may never see level 10, let alone level 25. But, as the developer says, “there are bigger enemies to dodge, more friends to be rescued, more powerups to be used and more than enough doors, locks, keys and gases to leave you dizzy with confusion.” Sounds like there are better things awaiting… wait, what? Adam has friends? Okay, this I just have to see.

  1. This game does not work. They did pull it out of the apple store. I hope they fix it cause the first level was nice. If only it would not crash or stall just after one level. Thank god it was free otherwise I would have been really pissed of…
