Ridiculous. Silly. Hilarious.Editor Rating
With Christmas just around the corner, we’ve been receiving a flurry – a snow flurry, you could say (*chuckles to self* Oh Jackie, stop it) – of Christmas apps on Appstruck. I highlighted a bunch of them in the article Best Christmas iPhone Apps for Everyone, but there were plenty more that, for one reason or another, didn’t catch my interest. Glitches, crashes, slow loading times, or just plain oddball and uncomfortable premises were but a few of the reasons I had for forgoing a review, but some Christmas apps were just too simplistic to cover, if you can try to imagine that. I swear, if I come across one more Christmas test message app, or tacky e-cards app, I might do something drastic, like actually using one of those apps. Just as I was about to give up on the slew of Christmas apps, one caught my eye with the sheer ridiculousness of its title, “Super Dance Christmas Elf.” With that kind of imagery, I conjured up a weird daydream about a dancing elf role edited out from Saturday Night Fever. I had to check this out.
Now, I won’t tell you this app astounded me with its ingenuity or cleverness, or that it was a better-made app than I initially assumed, or that I would recommend anyone to check it out with lofty expectations – check that, with any expectations – but it was, if only just for a second, surprisingly hilarious. It downright floored me.
First, take a picture of yourself or select an existing one from your photo album, then choose from among four different Christmas characters – Elf Classic, Elf New, Miss Merry Christmas, or Reggae Reindeer – in which to plug your face. I selected the most unflattering picture possible, one of me giving a deadpan stare and puckering my lips in a monstrous pout rivaling that of Angelina Jolie’s, and I moved the picture around, scrunched and zoomed and twisted it until it fit under the Miss Merry Christmas hat perfectly. All I had to do next was tap the Watch Dancer tab and then an animation would ensue – one, I presumed, that would involve some tacky, horribly drawn Christmas character with jerky motions, and those stupid side-to-side head movements.
So, imagine my surprise when what appeared was actually a recorded live dancer, an actual person, doing a little jig with my face planted atop her flirtatious, hip swaying body. It was so unexpected, so stunning, that I laughed uproariously and immediately showed my boyfriend. He was not amused. I guess it’s only funny if you have prior preconceptions. But, don’t worry, I planted his picture on the Elf character and sent his dancing, pointy ears to his mom.
It is pretty silly – downright ridiculous, really – but it succeeded in making me laugh. Nothing like a little Christmas cheeriness, I say. Besides, kids will think it’s funny seeing daddy’s big head on a dancing elf body. I can’t believe I’m giving it 4 stars.
One final note:
Reggae Reindeer? Really?

I also got the similar companion app Super Dance Soul Girl, my kids have sat for hours putting heads on bodies and emailing them to their cousin that has the app too. The cousin gets the emails on her phone and can make them dance on her phone. Yes the dancers my kids created get sent to the app on her phone.
